SeaWorld San Diego

One of the primary reasons we chose San Diego for our 2010 Summer Vacation was so the kids could have an opportunity to swim with the dolphins.

We made reservations well in advance and then prayed that a) the weather would cooperate, b) the kids would still want to swim with dolphins when that date arrived and c) that the staff wouldn't realize Alexia was still one month short of meeting the minimum age requirement (10).

Fortunately it all worked out perfectly. We couldn't have asked for better weather, better attitudes or better customer-focused staff.

At the designated time we checked in with the Dolphin Interaction center located in SeaWorld, just behind the Blue Horizons amphitheater (where the new dolphin show is held... pics from that will be in a future post). A short while later the kids were led away by a SeaWorld staff member to don their wetsuits - necessary to keep them comfortable in the dolphin friendly temperature water.

A short while later, the kids emerged all decked out in their SeaWorld suits and were paraded through the park to a special dolphin pool located a short distance away.

Already the smiles and excitement were evident. Even my continued attempts for a clear picture of the two of them didn't dampen their smiles.

The next half an hour was spent in the water with the dolphins while parents and park visitors watched, photographed and took videos.

Here are the best of the best pics that I managed to shoot. Notice the smiles. It made the whole vacation a total success.

Girls, I'm glad you genuinely enjoyed this opportunity. It was priceless.

San Diego Zoo

On August 15, 2010 we flew out of Bellingham to Seattle and then directly to San Diego for the TEAM Rolfs 2010 Summer Vacation.

The last time we vacationed in San Diego was when Mikayla was an only child and just two years old.

Our flight from Bellingham to Seattle was a special treat, allowing us to see all our favorites spots between the two airports:  WWU, Chuckanuts, the 4H Barn, the San Juan Islands, our neighborhood, etc...   As far as flights go, it was a nice ride.

Nana & Poppy drove over to San Diego from Arizona and met us at the airport, ready to shuttle us all around town.

Our first full day in San Diego was spent enjoying the fantastic exhibits at the San Diego Zoo.
I was hoping we would cross paths with a few of the cast members from Three's Company, but it turns out we were at the wrong zoo. That's ok, I took a lot of pictures anyway.

Obviously we didn't see the Reagle Beagle, but we did find this place:

Bugs were non-existent. Except for these two:

Here are a few pics of the actual animals we saw, including a baby flamingo, tiger, giraffe, arctic wolf, sun bear, panda bear, polar bear and lions, plus a million others.

After the Zoo, we went to the beach for a roller coaster ride, palm tree climbing and a beautiful sunset.

Poppy dragged us back to the hotel where we passed out in bed for a few hours of needed rest before our much awaited adventure at SeaWorld.

County Fair - Day 1

Day 1 of the fair had both girls (and their dogs) competing in Showmanship and agility.

They both performed very well and we're proud parents.

We'll all be at the fair again on Thursday... all day. Stop by and make fun of see us!

Thursday activities at the fair involve Dog Obedience and the costume contest (where the kids and dogs both wear costumes in the ring for judging). The kids are hoping for even more ribbons tomorrow and are impatient to find out if they managed to qualify for the State Fair.

Turning 13

Happy Thirteenth Birthday Mikayla!

Mikayla's 13th birthday began with the traditional Krispy Kreme doughnut for breakfeast, followed by a fun day at the Birch Bay Waterslides with a few of her best friends and a Trampoline Assembly + Slumber party.
